Banadiri community sends strong message to the National Leadership Forum

Mogadishu -

The Banadiri community leaders of all parts have unanimously sent strong call to the Somalia leaders attending the national Leaders’ Forum in Mogadishu and demanded the leaders to make clear and fair decision on the issues of the Banadiri community, which are stirred by political figures that want to grab the seats of the Banadiri community.

In an important conference in Hamaweyne District on Wednesday, 06 September 2016, the traditional leaders, political leaders, youth, women groups, religious leaders, business community, as well as students’ unions of the Banadiri Community, strongly supported Imam Osman Mohamed Osman, aka Imam Osman Yarow, who is one of the two signatories of the parliament selection in 2012 and has the mandate at the elections 2016.

The Banadiri community also decided to change the second signatory Bube Mude Ali, who went to Netherlands as an asylum seeker, and they unanimously agreed Suldan Aydaruus Haji Omar Haji Ali to be the replacement of the migrated elder, who is not willing to return to Somalia for the process of the election.

Both traditional leaders Imam Osman Mohamed Osman and Suldan Aydarus Haji Omar Haji Ali has the full support of the Banadiri traditional elders council, specially their chambers in Hamarweyne and Shanqagi, who are the final decision makers of the community affairs in terms of traditional leadership and decision making.

At the beginning, the elders collectively and very solidly condemned the politicians who stood to violate the Banadiri rights to decide the community future. Among the politicians who tried to misuse power and deprive Banadiri community from its right to choose its political representatives include some individuals who are members of the current parliament.

Those ruthless politicians tried to impose orders on the elders and threatened to change the signatory elders if they can’t guarantee their seats for them. They also tried to take the traditional leadership as political hostages, but fortunately the traditional leadership of Banadiri community defied all the illegal trials of the ruthless figures in the parliament.

The ruthless figures tried:

1.To replace Imam Osman Mohamed Osman, who defied their trial of corruption in the process, because they wanted him to guarantee the seats for the figures that started to violate him. While the Imam insisted that the seats will be open for contest, and every candidate must respect the free and fair process of the election of the members of the parliament that represent Banadiris, the ruthless politician tried to claim that he replaced the Imam.

2.They also announced that they replaced the Asharaaf traditional leader Nabadoon Shariif Cabdullahi Seyid-Cali Xaaji-Daa’uud, who also rejected all trials to bribe him in order to guarantee the seat for the individual, but when the individual politician failed to convince the leader he announced that he replaced Nabadoon Abdullahi and nominated a new person as a new Nabadoon.

3.A third ruthless politician tried to solely replace the position of the migrated elder with bogus person that may sign the seats for his/her, but without the approval of the Banadiri communities’ traditional leadership no one can be registered as a signatory. Any trial to do so will be considered a violation to the rights of the Banadiri Community.

Imam Osman Mohamed Osman, who addressed the conference sent strong message to the violent politicians and urged the government to take actions against the perpetrators.

"I am in the position to serve the community, I am not here to serve for the interest of certain politicians, I urge all those who are involved in subjecting us the threats to stop it, we are working on the mandate of our community, we are not serving for the interest of the politicians”

"I urge the government to stop those who are intervening us, they are trying to compromise the integrity of the traditional leadership, and I request the Prime Minister of Somalia to respect the letters I sent to him and respond to me”

Suldan Aydaruus Haji Omar Haji Ali, who is the genuine leader and signatory that was denied in 2012 through corruption and power abuse urged the government of Somali to consider the will of the community and respect the traditional leadership.

He said "I am the leader of the Banadiri chamber of traditional leaders of Shingani, I had the right to be the signatory in 2012, when I refused the corruption from the political leaders of that time they registered someone else in to my position, they did so because they wanted someone they could use and they used him”

"Now, I am still standing and I am the chief of the traditional elders in Shingani chamber, I urge the government to respect me, otherwise we consider all steps they take as a violation to our human rights, we can’t aToept individuals to register their own handpicked persons in to the places of our traditional leadership, without the consent of us”

The chairman of Banadiri Political Reformation Council Dr. Lutfi Sheriff Mohamed lashed out at the politicians who created chaos in the process in order to create gaps for their interest and called the out to stop the violations against the traditional leadership.

He said "We strongly support our traditional leadership, we need strong traditional leaders that are committed to their mandate, have integrity and defy corruption, that is the only way to get a free and fair process of election”

"I condemn any act intended to threaten the elders, any act intended to bribe a traditional elder or any act intended to try to register a fake person as traditional elder. I urge all politicians to stop such awful actions and to have confidence in themselves”

Lutfi appealed the Somalia government to take proper actions to stop the violations against the traditional leadership of the Banadiri community and listen to the community in order to address the concerns of the Banadiri community.

Finally, the conference sent strong call to the government, to the politicians and to the international community.

1.To the government: We appeal the government to stop the politicians that launched the campaign of violation against the traditional elders, and we urge the ministry for interior to refute any trial of registering fake elders in to the positions of the genuine traditional leaders.

2.To the politicians: Stop all the illegal acts you carry on in order to make sure to get seats, the seats are for the representation of the Banadiri community at the parliament and anyone getting them must be elected in a free and fairly contested process.

3.To the international community: Urge the National Leadership forum to make decisions that respect the rights of the Banadiri community, which was marginalized through process and is still subject to violations.
